May is Mental Health Month, and our team at HILO recognizes the importance of mental health in all aspects of life. Prioritizing mental well-being in the workplace can have a positive impact on organizational success, productivity and employee health, whether your tenants are back in the office, virtual or a mix of both. We have compiled a list of resources to educate and motivate your building community to create mentally healthy and supportive work environments.

Mind the Workplace Report
The 2022 Mind the Workplace Report by Mental Health America is a free resource that presents data from the Work Health Survey on the current state of employee mental health and well-being in the United States. The survey results strongly suggest that positive workplace mental health requires investment from all levels of an organization, and this report recommends best practices for doing so meaningfully.
Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health
Mental Health America’s Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health is a national certification program to recognize employers that are committed to creating mentally healthy workplaces. The Bell Seal evaluates and celebrates organizations that work proactively to improve mental wellness in the workplace and create supportive and positive environments for their employees. The recognition is awarded based on four categories of evaluation: workplace culture, benefits, compliance and wellness programs. It fosters organizational pride and optimism in both current and prospective employees. The applications to get Bell Seal Certified in 2023 open in October 2022.
Mental Health Toolkit
This toolkit from the Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion (EARN) offers a framework for creating a mental health-friendly workplace that acknowledges and understands mental health conditions for what they are: a non-visible disability. The framework is modeled around “4 A’s”: Awareness, Accommodations, Assistance and Access.
Center for Workplace Mental Health
The Center for Workplace Mental Health, a division of the American Psychiatric Association Foundation, works with organizations to make mental wellness a priority in their workplaces. They provide their network of over 10,000 employers with turn-key programs, toolkits, case studies, resources, publications and more, to help them create effective mental health policies for a more supportive workplace environment.

The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) works to provide employers with the tools, information and support necessary to maintain mental health and safety in the workplace. They have created a framework called the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace to help organizations guide their efforts towards promoting workplace mental wellbeing. MHCC helps support the implementation of this standard in organizations across all industries.
Not Myself Today
Not Myself Today is a National CMHA program created to help reduce stigma and support mental wellness at work. Organizations pay an annual subscription fee to gain access to a plethora of turn-key activities and printed materials, and a members-only online portal to help foster safe and supportive work environments. All funds generated by the Not Myself Today program go directly towards supporting the CMHA and their many mental health initiatives.
Mental Health Works
Mental Health Works is a series of workshops offered by the CMHA that address common workplace mental health concerns. The workshops are customizable to ensure they fit specific organizations’ unique mental wellness needs and are offered through accessible delivery options to accommodate all participants. They operate with three main objectives: raising awareness of mental health and illness, teaching techniques for responding to mental health situations and improving workplace culture and safety.
Guarding Minds at Work Survey
Guarding Minds at Work is a survey that helps employers measure employee experience with psychosocial factors that impact organizational and individual employee health, supported by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). Once organizations have distributed the survey and identified the top mental health-related concerns in their workplace, they are connected to suggested actions and resources and encouraged to complete an Action Plan Worksheet to outline their next steps.
